There are four main layers to data warehouses and the architecture of how they are configured with data mining:

• Operational Database layer - this layer is the source data and where all of the operational data is stored.
• Informational Access layer - this layer has data that is accessed for analyzing and reporting and also has the tools needed for reporting the data.
• Data Access layer - this layer is the interface between the informational data layer and the operational data layer. There are tools to transform, load and extract data that are found in this layer.
• Metadata layer - this layer is the data directory. It is often used in more detailed situations than operational layers. There are stores of the entire data warehouse that can be accessed in this layer.

Data mining can be very beneficial and when combined with the uses of data warehousing can have many benefits for your database applications. Data mining is very helpful in a lot of business functions that require storages of contact information and require more sophisticated methods of analyzing data.

Data mining also has impacts on the scientific and engineering fields that are using various techniques of data mining in the study of genetics and understanding the internal mapping of DNA sequences. Research is constantly being conducted on human genetics and using certain applications of data techniques is helping scientists to store and access the important data as they need it.
